NMT is defined as "the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system.”
NMT is an evidence based therapy with standardized techniques, therapeutic mechanisms and creative interventions applicable in working on sensorimotor training, speech and language training, cognitive training in neurologic learning and rehabilitation, neuropaediatric therapy and neurodevelopmental therapy. Its treatment techniques are based on the neuroscience model of music perception and production and the influence of music on functional changes in non-musical brain and behaviour functions.
NMTs are trained in neuro-anatomy/physiology, brain pathologies, medical terminology, and rehabilitation and habilitation of cognitive and/or motor functions.
